About Me

About Me

My name is Rebecca, and I live in Durham, North Carolina. I’m a teacher, writer, artist, and mentor; a friend, sister, aunt, and daughter. My dream is to be a mother, and I’m very happy to be working with the Independent Adoption Center.  I’m so excited about the possibilities open adoption holds: for me, my future child, and my child’s birthmother.

Children have always been a big part of my life.  I worked as a nanny all through college, ran a preschool in graduate school, and then taught middle school for ten years.  I loved every minute and remember every single child.  (I love getting summertime visits from my students, many of whom are all grown up now!) My happiest days are the ones I spend with my niece and nephew, Jaden and Kyler, and with Emily, my young neighbor down the street.  (She lived with me for a while and we’re still very close.)  I currently work in the English Department at Duke University, which is a wonderful place to be. My co-workers are fun, friendly people and my work is very satisfying.  Teaching is still my passion, though, and I plan to return to education over the next few years.

My family is close and loving.  My parents, and my brother and his family, all live nearby and we visit often.  Everyone is excited about a new baby joining the family, and my child’s birthmother will always be loved and welcomed in our hearts, too.  My friends have been wonderfully supportive during my adoption journey, and there are lots of children ready to welcome a new playmate in our circle of friends!

There was a time when I thought I would have a baby myself.  But after a couple of years (and a lot of fertility clinics), I realized I was on the wrong path.  When I found the Independent Adoption Center, I knew I was in the right place.  My child will always know what an amazing miracle they are, and that adoption was a choice his or her birthmother and I made, together, with respect and love.

I’d be very happy to answer any questions you have about my hopes to adopt and my plans for parenting.  You can get in touch with me any time, by phone, by email, or on Facebook.
